Based on early press, here’s what to keep in mind about OpenAI Frontier:
Availability is restricted. Right now, you need an invitation to access Frontier. OpenAI plans broader availability in the coming months, but there’s no specific timeline—so if you need to deploy AI agents today, you’ll need to look elsewhere (like Zapier) or join the waitlist.
Integration setup appears complex. Frontier emphasizes deep integration with your “systems of record”—data warehouses, CRMs, and core business applications. While that depth is powerful, it probably requires significant upfront technical work and ongoing IT involvement to maintain those connections. If you’re looking for quick deployment, this could be a barrier. Zapier, on the other hand, has thousands of pre-built integrations, which let you connect apps in minutes without custom development work.
Focused specifically on agents. Frontier is purpose-built for agent deployment and orchestration. If you need a broader platform that handles traditional automation workflows, data management, custom interfaces, or chatbots alongside agents, you’ll need additional tools.
