    The Download

    • RetroArch is a top emulator that lets you play many classic PlayStation games on your PC.
    • PCSX2 makes PlayStation 2 games look better than they did on the original console.
    • RPCS3 can play some PlayStation 3 games in amazing 4K quality.

A PlayStation emulator is software that mimics the functionality of this popular gaming console, enabling you to play PlayStation games on your computer. All that’s required is either the game disc or a copy of the disc image.

Emulators are available for the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation 3, with experimental versions for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.

The PlayStation emulators below are free and legal to use unless otherwise stated. However, in the United States, it’s illegal to download or distribute copyrighted software. While you can create backup copies of games you own, sharing them or downloading games others have copied is not permissible. Despite this, many websites still host ROMs and disc images of popular PlayStation games.

Some emulators require the appropriate PlayStation console BIOS, which is illegal to download or distribute. The only legal way to acquire it is to transfer it from your console onto a memory card, though this may void the warranty. Refer to the specific instructions that come with each emulator for setup assistance.

RetroArch isn’t a standalone emulator but a suite of programs known as “cores” that allow you to play thousands of classic games for numerous consoles on one PC.

The PS1 core, Beetle PSX, outperforms most standalone original PlayStation emulators. If you’re a fan of retro gaming, RetroArch is worth exploring.

    What We Like

    • Open source.

    • Available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

    • Looks better than some HD remakes.

    What We Don’t Like

    • Software glitches; see the list of supported games.

    • Games can be blurry or have black lines.

PCSX2 uses texture filtering and anti-aliasing to give PS2 games a polished appearance that surpasses most modern HD remakes. Its numerous cheating features and built-in HD video recorder make PCSX2 a popular choice for speedrunners.

After trying it, you may never want to play PS2 games on your console again.

    What We Don’t Like

    • Primarily aimed at software developers.

    • Not all commercial games are compatible.

    • May experience slow and buggy performance.

RPCS3 is an impressive program that lets you play and debug thousands of PlayStation 3 titles. The developers became notable in 2017 when a version of Persona 5 for RPCS3 began circulating online before the game’s official US release.

    What We Like

    • Impressive homebrew games, like VitaQuake, are exclusive to Vita3K.

    • First fully-functional Vita emulator.

Vita3K is noteworthy as the only PlayStation Vita emulator, even though it’s still experimental. Although the Vita wasn’t as successful as the PSP, it hasn’t deterred gamers from attempting to build a PS Vita emulator.

    What We Like

    • Available for Android and iOS.

    • Some titles look better than on the original console.

    • Easily transfer save data via an SD card.

PPSSPP enhances PSP games similar to how PCSX2 enhances PS2 games: by upscaling textures and resolution to improve the appearance of old titles beyond their original consoles. This feature is especially beneficial given the small size of the PSP screen.

You can also transfer saved data from your PSP to your computer with ease using an SD card.

    What We Like

    • Preferred tool for PlayStation speedrunners.

    • Supports full-screen and gamepad functionality.

    • Offers rerecording and debugging tools.

Trying to set a new world record by speedrunning your favorite game? In addition to recording gameplay, BizHawk lets you use save states and manipulate frame rates to capture the perfect playthrough.

BizHawk is a plugin that operates on top of a PS1 emulator called Mednafen, so both programs need to be downloaded.

XEBRA is a straightforward PlayStation emulator for Windows and Android, focusing on authenticity.

It doesn’t offer graphical enhancements or flashy UI elements, but it stands out as the only program that can successfully emulate PocketStation games, allowing you to finally play the Japanese version of Chocobo World.

If you prefer a standalone PS1 emulator, PCSX Reloaded is an obvious choice. It’s much easier to configure than RetroArch and supports nearly every game for the classic console.

PCSX Reloaded also works with any PC-compatible gamepad, so connect your DualShock controller for an authentic experience.
