We aren’t very deep into 2026, but we’re already getting excited about all the new TV coming down the pike. Around here, our tastes usually run towards fantasy and sci-fi, but we can expand our horizons. There’s also a lot of great drama and comedy shows on the way. In particular, a new dark comedy coming to Netflix has caught my eye, and it should have yours too.

Get ready to make some Big Mistakes

The creator of Schitt’s Creek gets together another dysfunctional family

As outlined by Netflix itself, Big Mistakes is about a pair of “deeply incapable siblings” who are somehow blackmailed into the world of organized crime, although we don’t know the details. The siblings, Nicky and Morgan, are played by Dan Levy and Taylor Ortega. Of the two of those, Levy’s name is more likely to ring a bell. Along with his father Eugene, he created the sitcom Schitt’s Creek, which over the course of six seasons went from underdog cult comedy to comfort food modern classic. And even though we don’t yet have a ton of details about Big Mistakes, it’s already giving off Schitt’s Creek vibes.

On Schitt’s Creek, Dan Levy played David Rose, the stuffy son of a business tycoon who had to suck it up and learn to live simple after his family lost its money. Annie Murphy played his sister Alexis, and while neither of them were blackmailed into organized crime, they could definitely be described as “incapable siblings.” Their bickering chemistry was terrific, to the point where Schitt’s Creek fans will quote their barbs back and forth to each other ad nauseum to this day. Dan Levy wrote a lot of the episodes for Schitt’s Creek himself, and you definitely get the idea he knows the brother-sister dynamic inside and out. If he can bring even a little of that magic to the central duo in Big Mistakes, the show is already ahead of the game.

But as fun as it was to watch David and Alexis squabble, the comedy in that show was rarely “dark.” At the end of the day, all of the characters were basically decent people, which is boring. Big Mistakes already sounds like it’s taking things in a bleaker direction with the crime angle, and that might be thanks to the show’s other creator.

Rachel Sennott is also a co-creator on Big Mistakes

She can lend the show more edge

Rachel Sennott is a comedian and writer who got some attention for writing and starring in the teen sex comedy Bottoms back in 2023. Since then, she created I Love LA, an HBO sitcom about Gen Z influencers, talent managers, and other completely insufferable people living in Los Angeles obsessing over celebrity. I Love LA is the kind of comedy where you might not always like the characters, but you do find them funny, and while watching them you get the horrible feeling that people like that really are out there trying to post their way to fame and fortune.

The characters on Schitt’s Creek can be snarky, but at the end of the day the show basically wants them to be happy. But I’m not sure about the people on I Love LA, who may be too far gone. There’s a lot of potential in bringing together those two sensibilities: we could get the charming characters of Schitt’s Creek with the biting social commentary of I Love LA, leaving us with one great dark comedy.

Big Mistakes also gets a lot of points right off the bat for casting: Laurie Metcalf, a veteran pro who’s been in everything from Roseanne to The Big Bang Theory to the Scream franchise, will play Linda, the mother of the two main siblings. Schitt’s Creek cast comedy legend Catherine O’Hara as Moira Rose, David’s mother, and basically just sat back and relaxed as she turned in hilarious performance after hilarious performance. It feels like the same thing could happen with Metcalf, whose resume is similarly impressive.

    With apologies for vagueness

    Anything could happen

I realize I might be getting ahead of myself. I’m talking about a show that has yet to release any trailers, official images, or even a detailed synopsis. But when I see this much talent combining in a particular way, it’s hard not to get a little excited. At a bare minimum, Big Mistakes feels like a show to watch.

We also don’t have a firm release date, but Netflix has confirmed that Big Mistakes will come out sometime this year. It will run for eight episodes. Will it last beyond that? Add that to the pile of things we don’t know.

    Comedy everywhere

In the meanwhile, there are a lot of great comedies to watch. Netflix is host to a ton of great, hilarious movies that are always worth returning to. There are also a lot of terrific comedy series, on Netflix and elsewhere, that deserve a look.
