Spinach dip is a nearly perfect appetizer. It’s melty, gooey, and hearty, making it a shareable dish no guest would dare deny. And yes, we stand by that nearly perfect description, because, if you can believe it, there’s an even more delectable spinach dip out there. If you’re willing to take a chance, there’s a way to add a refreshing textural element that not only takes things up a notch but will also set your spinach dip apart from the rest.

How To Make the Best-Ever Spinach Dip

The answer to the best-ever spinach dip comes down to one ingredient: water chestnuts. It might sound unusual to you, but hear us out. Adding water chestnuts to your spinach dip will provide an unexpected, ultra-satisfying crunch you didn’t know your dip was missing.

Leveling up spinach dip with water chestnuts is incredibly easy. All you have to do is stir in a can of drained, chopped water chestnuts with the other main ingredients. Chill the dip in the fridge for at least 6 hours, then place it in a bread bowl right before serving. Warm the bread bowl in the oven on low for a few minutes to take it up yet another notch.

    What Are Water Chestnuts?

Water chestnuts are edible tubers of the Eleocharis dulcis plant, native to Asia, tropical Africa, Australia, and the Pacific. They’re common in Chinese and Chinese-American dishes, like stir-fries, cashew chicken, and sizzling rice soup.

They’re also often featured in appetizers and salads because they add a texture that can’t really be replicated by any other ingredient. For a truly unexpected twist, try adding them to a traditional side like green bean casserole. Look for canned water chestnuts in the international aisle at your grocery store.

Can’t find water chestnuts? There are still plenty of ways to add a dose of crunch to your spinach dip. Allrecipes Allstar thedailygourmet suggests using hearts of palm, jicama, or radishes. All three provide a light, refreshing bite that’ll elevate the dip, much like water chestnuts.

Once you’ve had spinach dip in this way, there’s no turning back. Don’t believe us? Try our Best Spinach Dip Ever and taste the difference for yourself.
