Luxury SUVs are typically known for comfort, refinement, and capability, but not for efficiency. Many non-hybrid luxury crossovers prioritize power and prestige over fuel economy, making impressive mileage a bonus rather than an expectation. Yet in 2025, one non-hybrid luxury SUV quietly outpaces nearly all of its rivals in real-world efficiency, proving that premium driving doesn’t have to come with premium fuel bills.
What sets this SUV apart is how it balances a refined powertrain with thoughtful engineering designed to optimize everyday fuel use. While competitors lean on hybrid or plug-in tech to hit high mpg numbers, this model manages to deliver standout efficiency from a conventional engine, without compromising the premium ride quality, upscale interior, or advanced tech buyers expect from a luxury badge.
For drivers who want the best of both worlds, luxury refinement and surprisingly low fuel costs, this standout SUV redefines what efficiency looks like in the non-hybrid luxury segment. It’s proof that traditional powertrains can still deliver meaningful savings when engineered right.

This Is the Most Efficient Non-Hybrid Crossover in 2025
This fuel-sipping crossover doesn’t need hybrid tech to save you money on gas.
The 2026 BMW X1 is more efficient than all of its direct rivals
With the price of just about everything rising, it is more important than ever to find savings wherever you can. While hybrids will definitely save you more money at the pump, we do understand the desire to stick with an ICE vehicle, especially because hybrids generally cost thousands more. If you’re looking for a small crossover that delivers luxury environs and exciting driving dynamics without guzzling fuel, the BMW X1 sits at the top of the stack.

Subcompact Luxury SUV
The BMW X1 comes in two potencies. The base xDrive28i comes equipped with a pretty perky turbocharged four-cylinder engine. If you’re looking for something that packs a little bit more of a punch, the German brand also offers the M35i, which makes an impressive 312 horses. Obviously, the xDrive28i is a bit more efficient, though. Both models come standard with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive.
In true BMW fashion, the X1 is a well-balanced machine. When cruising, it feels comfortable and controlled, able to eat up most bumps and deviations in the road without any complaint. Put your foot down, and it feels like a different machine, with its athletic handling making it an absolute joy to drive through twisty back roads. The more expensive and more powerful M35i is plenty impressive, getting up to 60 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds, but it is a bit too taught for the X1’s daily driver persona.
Fuel economy
Model | City | Highway | Combined |
|---|---|---|---|
xDrive28i | 25 MPG | 34 MPG | 28 MPG |
M35i | 24 MPG | 32 MPG | 27 MPG |
Previously, the Lexus NX 250 would have been able to compete with the X1 for the title of most efficient gas-powered luxury SUV, but the Japanese brand has gotten rid of their base model. This leaves BMW at the top of the totem pole. We will say, that the mechanically similar X2 also delivers similar levels of efficiency, though.
The xDrive28i model is the most efficient, getting 28 miles per gallon combined. What is pretty impressive, though, is that the much more powerful M35i only loses a single mile per gallon in comparison.
This Japanese SUV Offers Luxury and Bulletproof Reliability
This small SUV offers exceptional comfort without sacrificing your peace of mind.
There is no cheaper BMW SUV than the X1
As well as being able to save you a little extra on gas, the X1 is also a relatively affordable luxury crossover. We’re not saying that it’s the best crossover to buy if you’re on a budget, but if you want something luxurious it is a shout cheaper than a lot of the other SUVs out there. It also comes packed with a pretty good package of standard features, which is quite unlike BMW.
2026 BMW X1 trims and pricing
Model | Starting MSRP |
|---|---|
xDrive28i | $43,200 |
M35i | $52,400 |
Considering that the average American spends just over $50,000 when buying a new car, the X1 isn’t actually priced all that badly. It isn’t the cheapest small luxury crossover, with options like the Volvo XC40 and the Lexus UX starting quite a bit cheaper, but it does undercut its rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz, the Q3 and the GLB-Class. It is definitely one of the best value-for-money options in its segment.
The M35i is a pretty enticing option, coming with more power and features like adaptive dampers, but it just feels a little bit too high-strung. The X1 feels like it was meant to be a sleek, fun, and unobtrusive crossover, and we think that the xDrive28i achieves that goal better. It is also almost $10,000 cheaper and comes with a long list of standard features. If you’re willing to shell out an extra $2,900 for the Technology Package, you can also get things like a panoramic moonroof, a heads-up display, parking assist, and a heated steering wheel.
Warranty and maintenance package
- Limited warranty: Four years or 50,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty: Four years or 50,000 miles
- Complimentary maintenance: Three years or 36,000 miles
People sometimes overlook just how much value there is in a good warranty package, especially when complimentary maintenance is tacked on to a purchase. BMW offers some pretty reasonable cover in terms of the bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties, but what really sets them apart is that they offer up to three years of maintenance on the house. Considering how expensive BMWs are to maintain, this is a pretty big benefit.
How BMW Takes the Fight To Tesla With the New 2026 iX3
BMW has just revealed its all-new 2026 iX3, a sleek electric SUV designed to rival Tesla with cutting-edge tech, bold design, and impressive range.
Inside, the X1 is just as plush as some of its larger siblings
BMW’s most affordable crossover may seem a little more budget-oriented compared to some of the other vehicles in the brand’s stable. This might lead you to believe that it isn’t quite as luxurious on the inside. However, the X1 comes exceptionally well-equipped and definitely lives up to all expectations. It is practical, comfortable, and loaded with modern technology.
BMW X1 interior comfort
Model | Sedan |
|---|---|
Front row headroom | 42.1 inches |
Front row legroom | 40.4 inches |
Second row headroom | 39.3 inches |
Second row legroom | 37 inches |
Cargo capacity (behind second row) | 25.7 cubic feet |
For a subcompact SUV, the BMW X1 is actually pretty spacious on the inside. It is quite a bit more practical than a lot of the other options in this segment. Up front there is plenty of room, but what is more impressive is that even tall passengers will find they have enough space in the back row. Cargo space is also on the higher side of the segment.
The X1, like many modern BMWs, makes use of a slightly minimalistic design ideology. Things are neat throughout the cabin and the high quality materials used throughout speak to the overall build quality. All models come with desirable luxury features, including a moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient interior lighting, and heated front seats.
Infotainment and technology
BMW has adopted a uniform dashboard layout across essentially every model in their stable, including the X1. A single panel sits atop the dashboard, curving slightly, containing two screens. One acts as the digital gauge display while the other runs the infotainment system. The infotainment screen runs BMW’s latest iDrive 9 software.
Every model offers wireless compatibility for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as built-in navigation. There are a number of USB-C ports, with a wireless smartphone charging pad being an optional extra. The optional Technology Package adds the most desirable equipment, though, including a 360-degree camera, a heads-up display, and a premium Harman/Kardon sound system.
