You might consider most of Trader Joe’s products pretty perfect on their own, but put them together in your kitchen? That’s when the real TJ’s magic happens.
Yes, the store sells plenty of prepared, ready-to-eat items, but the grocery brand doesn’t necessarily want you to just dig right in. It’s all about encouraging customers to experiment at home and discover what those ingredients can do. In fact, the brand’s website offers 36 full pages of recipes made entirely from Trader Joe’s products, plus the “Inside Trader Joe’s” podcast often reveals even more crew-approved hacks.
So it’s safe to say, you’re not getting the full value out of a TJ’s run until you start playing around. Fortunately, our editors have already dreamed up quite a few recipes that make experimenting easy: a mind-blowing 20-minute pasta dinner, an impossibly good three-ingredient grilled cheese, and a “struggle meal” that somehow tastes like takeout.
But my most recent Trader Joe’s recipe find might be one of the best of them all. It’s quick, easy, and satisfying enough to fit any meal of the day—and it tastes like a grown-up version of a childhood classic.
How To Make Trader Joe’s Copycat Hot Pockets
Ever wished Trader Joe’s sold Hot Pockets? Well, now it does—kind of.
I stumbled across this recipe on Reddit, where it was getting plenty of love from fellow TJ’s fans. It uses just four ingredients—all from Trader Joe’s—and turns them into a handheld meal you’ll look forward to at any time of the day. If you love Hot Pockets but you’re in the mood for something a little more “adult,” this is the answer.
The recipe features four signature Trader Joe’s items:
- All Butter Puff Pastry Sheets: a chef-recommended staple that bakes up golden, flaky, and perfectly puffed
- Brie Cheese Flavored Spread: a new, creamy, and cravable cheese spread—like whipped Brie ready in a container
- Sliced Rosemary Ham: the tender, flavorful seasonal deli pick
- Everything But the Bagel Seasoning: the cult-favorite blend that needs no introduction
The process is incredibly simple: Lay out the thawed puff pastry, smear on a layer of Brie spread, top with sliced ham, add more Brie, then place a second pastry sheet over the top. Seal the edges with a fork (you’ll get about six pastries total). Brush the tops with melted unsalted butter so the seasoning sticks, then sprinkle generously with Everything But the Bagel.
Bake the hand pies at 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) for 20 to 25 minutes, or air-fry them for 12 to 15 minutes at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). And just like that, your Trader Joe’s Ham and Brie Hot Pocket is ready to enjoy.
The hand pie comes out warm, savory, buttery, and oh so comforting, with that flaky pastry bite we all instinctively crave this time of year. “10/10,” the creator wrote. It may not be a one-minute microwave meal, but, personally, I’d take this over a frozen pocket any day.
“Brilliant. Making this,” one commenter added. “I like to add raspberry jam to mine, sweet and savory,” suggested another.
So if you’re feeling inspired by this Trader Joe’s creation, stock up on the ingredients while you can. These specialty TJ’s products might be beloved, but they won’t be around forever.
