Google is now officially testing pushing searchers from AI Overviews in Google Search into the AI Mode interface. When you click on the “Show more” button within some AI Overviews, Google may jump you directly into the AI Mode interface. When you scroll through the AI Overview, you can ask a follow up question directly with AI Mode in that interface.

What Google said. Robby Stein from Google announced this on X, saying, “Today we’re starting to test a new way to seamlessly go deeper in AI Mode directly from the Search results page on mobile, globally.”

Here is a video of this in action, with the full message from Robby Stein:

(2/2) This means you’ll continue to get an AI Overview as a helpful starting point, and now you can also ask conversational follow-up questions in AI Mode – right from where you are.

It’s one seamless experience: a quick snapshot when you need it, and deeper conversation when…

Previous testing. Truth is, this was being tested back in October 2025 and tested numerous times since then. But here is Google officially announcing the test, which means to me that this is more likely to fully roll out.

The issue. This will likely lead to even less clicks from the Google Search AI Overviews results to publishers and websites. The large “Show more” button, instead of loading more sources and details, will take you to a much more detailed answer, which is less likely to lead to clicks to your site.

Why we care. Be aware of this test and how it may impact your traffic from Google Search. This doesn’t look like a great thing for driving search traffic to your site or websites in general.
