    The Download

    • Tubi offers thousands of free movies and supports streaming across many devices, but it has ads.
    • Pluto TV lets you watch live and on-demand TV, but it isn’t available everywhere and has ads.
    • YouTube is very popular and simple to use, but it also displays advertisements.

Whether you’re in your office having lunch or trying to pass the time on a rainy day, watching movies on your phone is a great way to stay entertained.

If you use an Android smartphone, you’ll find many movie apps available. But which ones are the best? Here are some of the top free movie download apps for Android.

Founded in 2014, Tubi is a free movie streaming service supported by ads, offering thousands of titles. To help you find what you want to watch, Tubi offers dozens of genres, including a useful “Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes” category for those who follow movie ratings.

If you use multiple devices for streaming, Tubi supports Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV.

    What We Like

    • Longevity has provided thousands of options.

    • Familiar and easy interface.

    • Video replay rarely lags.

    • Official list of high-quality movies curated by YouTube.

Most of us are familiar with YouTube, so this shouldn’t be a surprise. YouTube offers a paid premium service called YouTube Premium, which provides ad-free viewing on regular YouTube and access to original programming. Additionally, it includes a vast catalog of free movies available to all users, including non-subscribers.

The company curates a collection of free movies, so you don’t have to hunt for full-length films like you did many years ago. Be aware, however, that anyone can upload movies to YouTube, so you might find pirated content if you stray from YouTube’s curated collection.

This app offers over 100 channels to suit various tastes, including new movies and sports channels. The interface resembles the familiar TV programming grid, making it easier to find streaming programs.

By signing up, you can customize your channels. Pluto TV is unique in offering both live streaming and on-demand programming.

A unique option for university students, Kanopy only requires your university login credentials for authentication. Participating public libraries also offer free access.

It offers hundreds of documentaries and educational videos, along with a range of mainstream programming.

    What We Like

    • Nice selection of classic films.

    • Can remove ads without paying.

    • Plenty of categories to choose from.

    • Can do an open text search for titles.

If you love classic movies, Old Movies is your go-to app, featuring hundreds of films made before 1970. Though the app includes ads, you can remove them by giving it a good rating.

Most of the available movies aren’t mainstream favorites, but there are tons of good ones for hours of free entertainment.

    What We Like

    • Available on numerous platforms.

    • Handy watchlist to save programs.

    • The Collections allow you to find series easily.

If you enjoy mental stimulation with your entertainment, CuriosityStream is a great place to start watching. The free viewing library is limited, but the paid plan is inexpensive.

The app is available on various platforms, including several smart TVs. It offers numerous categories to find the topics you’re interested in and includes a customizable watchlist, so you can save programs for later viewing.

While Kodi requires additional add-ons for movies and TV, it remains a popular app for streaming content. Kodi’s advantage lies in its nearly endless video streaming options.

The main thing to watch for is add-ons with pirated content. If you choose to use one of these add-ons, make sure you use a VPN for your protection.

    What We Like

    • Free to join.

    • Lots of creative videos to stream.

    • No in-video ads.

    • Ability to download videos.

    • Can follow video creators.

Often seen as YouTube’s younger sibling, Vimeo hosts more than just homebrewed videos. For the adventurous, it offers a collection of unique film shorts and art films, making it a great place to discover budding directors.

Like YouTube, you can also upload your own videos, although Vimeo is more for professionals trying to break into the movie business.

    What We Like

    • A large number of titles for free.

    • Family friendly, wholesome entertainment.

    • Simple movie rating system.

    • Easy to use interface.

    • Available on multiple platforms.

    What We Don’t Like

    • Have to sign up for free stuff.

    • The app has ads unless you pay for a membership.

    • Must pay a monthly subscription fee for all content.

For family-friendly viewing, the Dove Channel is an excellent choice. Founded in 2015, this Christian-based service offers hours of entertainment for all family members. It even features its own rating system based on age appropriateness (All ages, 12+, and 18+).

The app is simple to navigate and also has a web version if you want to stream on your computer. They even have the channel on Roku if you have a Roku receiver. While they do have a paid membership, which removes ads and gives you full access to exclusive content, there are a ton of movies available for free.
