KitchenAid’s Artisan Series stand mixer is downright iconic, and there’s no denying that. We’re big fans, too; it even earned the top spot in our head-to-head stand mixer tests. Open-source software development is driven by global communities, and, in accordance with human nature, those communities will disagree, form factions, and push their own agendas. Growing up, I got to spend plenty of time with my great-grandmother. She made it to 103, and while her hugs were always a little stiff and bony, she was incredibly sturdy. Whenever I went to her house, she made my favorite meal: beef pot roast. The meat was tender, the vegetables (mainly carrots) still had some bite, and she would always make sure my plate didn’t have any onion. Her pot roast was perfect and I still haven’t had any better. Not everyone is lucky enough to have experienced their great-grandmother’s pot roast, but thankfully, you can still capture…

At TechCrunch Disrupt, three investors took the stage to dissect what makes — and breaks — a pitch deck. Jyoti Bansal, a founder-turned-investor; Medha Agarwal of Defy; and Jennifer Neundorfer of January Ventures shared with the crowd their candid views on what works in a pitch deck — and what doesn’t. Their biggest pet peeve? Buzzword overload. The more a founder says AI in the pitch, Agarwal said, the less AI the company likely uses. “The people who are doing things that are really innovative, they’ll talk about it, and it’s built in, but it’s not the core of their pitch,” she told the audience.   Bansal, who built and sold multiple companies…

Of the vintage physical media formats making a comeback, CDs and vinyl records are the most popular, and for good reason. Vinyl is enticing and collectible, with limited-edition variants and colored discs, and there’s something incredibly satisfying about creating sound by running a needle through a groove. On the flip side, CDs are a higher-quality format with practical advantages, including their smaller size. But what if there was a format that combined the analog nature of vinyl with the portability of CDs? Cassette tapes fit the bill, and while they’re absolutely nothing new, they came with major barriers to entry…

Sufficient Conditions for Power Law Spectral Dynamics, by Yizhou Zhang View PDF HTML (experimental) Abstract:Empirical power–law scaling has been widely observed across modern deep learning systems, yet its theoretical origins and scope of validity remain incompletely understood. The Generalized Resolution–Shell Dynamics (GRSD) framework models learning as spectral energy transport across logarithmic resolution shells, providing a coarse–grained dynamical description of training. Within GRSD, power–law scaling corresponds to a particularly simple renormalized shell dynamics; however, such behavior…

Researchers have unveiled a new AI video generation technique called TurboDiffusion that can create synthetic videos at near-instant speed. It can generate AI video up to 200 times faster than with existing methods, without sacrificing visual quality. The work is a joint effort between ShengShu Technology, Tsinghua University, and researchers affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley. According to its developers, the system is designed to dramatically cut the time it takes to generate video, a process that has traditionally been slow and computationally expensive. TurboDiffusion sets a new speed benchmark ShengShu Technology When tested on a consumer PC equipped…

Why It Works Baking the tart on a preheated rimmed baking sheet conducts heat into the base, mimicking a pizza stone for a crispy bottom.Pepper jelly adds just enough savoriness to balance its sweetness, avoiding cream cheese–and–grape jelly territory. Creating a textured surface on the cheese filling makes for a more enjoyable bite and improves visual appeal.  When sweet, spicy pepper jelly came on the market in 1970s Texas, it tore through the American South. Many dishes were born of it, among them cream cheese and pepper jelly dip, a storied party appetizer that my in-laws in Virginia first introduced me…
