Android vs iPhone: here’s what TechRadar readers prefer

So it’s official: TechRadar readers are more Android fans than iPhone users. A result that I was mostly expecting, but not with quite as much of a gap.

Around the start of November, I posted a poll asking the big question: are TechRadar readers iPhone or Android? After several weeks, the results are in: 62% of poll participants are part of the Android Army, while 29% are Team Apple, and 10% use both.

Now, the sheer volume of choice when it comes to Android phones, including the picks of the best Android phones, would mean such phones are going to be the most popular. Equally, Apple has a vast US presence, as does TechRadar, so I’d have thought we’d probably see closer to 40% of readers being iPhone users.

Zipping to the comments, one of the standout reasons for people to choose Android over iPhone comes down to the restrictive nature of Apple’s phones; given we’re talking TechRadar readers, where I’d assume a little more tech knowledge than the average person, it’s not a surprise the locked-down nature of iPhones might not appeal to some.

“I have always been [an] Android user. Apple and iPhone are too controlling for me,” said commenter Cscar.

This was given further weight by commenter Godders: “I gave up on iPhone years ago because I hated being forced to [do] things Apple’s way. If I wanted to transfer a file to my PC I had to email it to myself because iTunes made it difficult. No cut and paste option.”

“I switched to Sony Xperia which were nice phones but I found the screens unreliable. Eventually, I went for a Google Pixel 6 and recently a Pixel 10 Pro. These are great phones and do everything I want and more. I cannot think of any reason why I would go back to iPhone.”

As a big fan of the best Google Pixel phones, I can see why Godders went down the Pixel route. And these would be the phones I’d recommend to anyone moving from iOS to Android.

There are some commenters who noted they use both iPhone and Android, but the evolution of Android, coupled with the solid hardware, seems to be one of the drivers of people choosing Android phones or moving from iPhone.

“I have both, there are elements I like better on each, but if I could only choose one it would most definitely be android. There’s so much more freedom and customization,” said commenter SErics. “The ability to side load. I just prefer the Android interface over iOS but that’s obviously personal preference.”

While I’m an iPhone user, because it’s so straightforward to use and somewhat tool-like rather than an intriguing gadget, I do feel the pull of Android once again. I’d be curious to see what the rumored Samsung Galaxy S26 brings to the table next year and whether that will be the phone that brings me back to Android.

If you have any thoughts to add, head to the comments and let me know, especially if you’re a die-hard iPhone user.
