In the time it takes for you to read this sentence, ChatGPT will have processed over 100,000 prompts from around the world. The AI Goliath first launched in 2022, and now sits atop the large language model (LLM) mountain after years of software updates and branding campaigns.

While other AI chatbots have since emerged—Google Gemini, Claude, and Grok, to name a few—ChatGPT stands alone. It’s achieved a near Kleenex and Band-Aid status of brand recognition (have you ever asked for a facial tissue or a bandage instead?).

    Do more with ChatGPT

Discover more ways to add AI to your workflows.

Some consumers think ChatGPT may be in a bubble akin to the dot-com era of the early 2000s. Others have sworn fealty to the LLM and accepted it as their new technological overlord (I haven’t picked a side, but I do use “please” and “thank you” frequently in my prompts just in case).

No matter which side of the aisle you find yourself in, it’s clear that ChatGPT has never been bigger—and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. I’ve scoured the internet for the most impressive (and reliable) ChatGPT statistics I could find to prove that point, and a few that could guide your business strategy for the next few years and beyond.

    Table of contents:

    ChatGPT usage statistics

When it first came out, using ChatGPT for serious inquiries seemed a bit taboo. Sure, it was fun for entertainment, but using it to help with work or for serious advice? Store that into the “things you don’t admit” drawer, right next to the file of you butchering that Woodrow Wilson presentation in high school history.

But now, is anyone still pretending they aren’t using it constantly? The ChatGPT daily usage statistics are ballooning, and everyone is logging in for work, advice, and entertainment.

    1. Close to half (49%) of all ChatGPT queries fall under the category of “asking.” (OpenAI)

    2. 70% of ChatGPT usage is not work-related. (OpenAI)

    3. As of July 2025, 10% of the global adult population uses ChatGPT weekly. (OpenAI)

    4. Nearly 80% of ChatGPT usage is related to either practical guidance, seeking information, or writing. (OpenAI)

    5. Practical guidance-related messages account for 29% of overall usage. (OpenAI)

    6. As of June 2025, 40% of work-related messages were about writing. (OpenAI)

    7. 26% of adults use ChatGPT for learning, up from 8% in March 2023. (Pew Research)

    8. 22% of adults use ChatGPT for entertainment, up from 11% in March 2023. (Pew Research)

    9. 79% of adults have heard of ChatGPT, compared to 58% in March 2023. (Pew Research)

ChatGPT usage stats: 80% of prompts are for guidance/writing; 70% is not work-related; 26% of adults use it for learning.

    ChatGPT growth statistics

Do you remember where you were when you first heard about ChatGPT? I was doomscrolling TikTok before getting out of bed, saw a video on OpenAI, and jumped over to my laptop to generate an article on roofing (no idea why, but it’s now a core memory).

Growth for ChatGPT has now skyrocketed, with billions of people worldwide using it for fun, work, and their own roofing articles. And the revenue growth has matched the query surge.

    1. As of May 2025, ChatGPT adoption growth rates were four times higher in the lowest-income countries than in the highest-income countries. (OpenAI)

    2. From June 2024 to July 2025, the total daily work-related messages grew from 213 million to 716 million. (OpenAI)

    3. From June 2024 to July 2025, the total daily non-work-related messages grew from 238 million to 1.91 billion. (OpenAI)

    4. In July 2025, ChatGPT became the fastest app to reach 1 billion global downloads across iOS and Google Play. (SensorTower)

    5. Respondents who said their organizations were actively using GenAI increased from 12% in 2024 to 22% in 2025. (Thomson Reuters)

    6. ChatGPT mobile app revenue has increased from $174 million in 2024 to $1.35 billion in 2025. (TechCrunch)

    ChatGPT user demographics

ChatGPT follows the standard tech trend: younger individuals are typically more likely to embrace new technology, and older individuals are more likely to hum The Times They Are A-Changin’ while sticking to what they know best.

    1. 46% of messages come from users aged 18-25. (OpenAI)

    2. 23% of work-related messages come from users under the age of 26. (OpenAI)

    3. Users in professional or technical careers use ChatGPT for work more often. (OpenAI)

    4. 58% of adults under 30 have used ChatGPT. (Pew Research)

    5. Only 10% of adults over 65 have used ChatGPT. (Pew Research)

    6. ChatGPT is the preferred AI tool for 72% of Gen Z AI users, but only 35% of Baby Boomers. (Rev)

ChatGPT demographics: 46% of ChatGPT users are 18–25, and 72% of Gen Z AI users prefer ChatGPT.

    ChatGPT vs. other AI tools

ChatGPT is the hare. They have the head start. They have brand recognition. They have the revenue. But in that classic Aesop tale, the hare doesn’t win.

As of now, OpenAI has a healthy lead in users and revenue—but they can’t afford to lay down next to the finish line and take a nap. Otherwise, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and the creep of other tortoises (yes, that is actually the name for a group of that animal) will be ready to win the race.

    1. ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool used in Zapier workflows, followed by Zapier’s proprietary tools and Anthropic’s Claude. (Zapier)

    2. ChatGPT is the most commonly used AI app in the workplace and is more than twice as popular as Google’s AI search or Gemini (71% compared to 32% and 31%, respectively). (Exploding Topics)

    3. ChatGPT captured roughly 69% of AI-tool web traffic in Aug 2025. (Similar Web)

    4. ChatGPT ranked #1 globally in “AI Chatbots & Tools” in August 2025. (Similar Web)

    5. As of September 2025, ChatGPT held 80% of the global chatbot market. (Stat Counter)

    6. At 51%, a recent survey shows the vast majority of AI users think ChatGPT understands prompts better than any other AI tool—over three times more than Gemini (16%), the next-highest competitor. (Rev)

Top 5 AI apps in Zapier workflows: ChatGPT, AI by Zapier, Claude, Gemini, and Chatbots rank as the most used tools.

    The future of ChatGPT

Deep-pocket investors are throwing money at AI opportunities, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. While OpenAI’s revenue is exploding, so are the rising energy costs required to power AI data centers.

    1. OpenAI hit $10 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR) in 2025 and is targeting a whopping $125 billion in revenue in 2029. (The Information)

    2. In the first half of 2025, OpenAI made $4.3 billion, which is 16% higher than in 2024. (Reuters)

    3. OpenAI is now the world’s most valuable startup, achieving a valuation of $500 billion. (Financial Times)

    4. By 2028, roughly 15% of day-to-day business decisions could be made by agentic AI. (Reuters)

    5. AI data centers will need roughly $6.7 trillion globally by 2030 to meet the demand for processing power. (McKinsey & Company)

    6. Global data center energy demand could triple by 2030, with 70% of that demand coming from AI. (McKinsey & Company)

    7. To address the global need for AI, computing businesses will need to invest $5.2 trillion in data centers by 2030. (McKinsey & Company)
