There’s a discarded flagship router that you can find used almost anywhere. You should get it. Why should you get it? Why should everyone get it? Because right now, you might think your network is “fine” but you don’t know what you’re missing until you have a dedicated tri-band workhorse running open-source firmware. Even if you think you don’t need it today, you will need it eventually.

I got mine for $30, and for that price, it’s the ultimate just-in-case tool. The expanded range of motion it gave my network was so immediate that I had my dad grab a used one too. And now, I want to tell you why you should buy this router before everyone else realizes how good it is.

Why this discarded router is a hidden game

Enterprise hardware at thrift store prices?

When it comes to networking, we’re always told that newer is better. Of course, the ISP marketing department and tech giants want you to believe that unless you’re dropping hundreds of dollars on the latest Wi-Fi 7 mesh system, your home network is a relic. Could it be that’s also why router manufacturers barely roll out any updates for their firmware after a year has gone past? I won’t get into that. Let’s talk about the good stuff: enter the Linksys EA8300 Max-Stream.

The beauty of this device is the “Why Not?” factor. At $30, it is a low-stakes experiment. Even if you don’t have a burning need for a new router today, you will eventually.

Once a $200 flagship, this tri-band workhorse is now regularly discarded on eBay and in thrift stores for as little as $30. At that price, most new routers are cheap, dual-band plastic toys with locked-down firmware and weak processors. The EA8300, however, is a quad-core beast that — when paired with the right software — outperforms modern hardware triple its price.

The beauty of this device is the “Why Not?” factor. At $30, it is a low-stakes experiment. Even if you don’t have a burning need for a new router today, you will eventually. If you buy it, and it sits on your shelf as a backup, you’ve spent the price of a movie ticket on a high-grade router. If you plug it in and realize it covers that one dead spot in your kitchen, it has already paid for itself. But, once you realize this router can handle specialized tasks like VPN tunneling, ad-blocking, and smart load-balancing, the value proposition becomes… astronomical.

    The hardware advantage

It’s a big advantage, but it’s not even the biggest

Most cheap routers are dual-band — meaning they have one 2.4GHz radio and one 5GHz radio. The EA8300 is a tri-band router. It features an additional 5GHz radio and gives you a second highway for your data. In 2026, our homes are crowded with smart plugs, tablets, and phones. Having that third band allows you to isolate your high-performance devices from the noise of your smart home. You didn’t know you needed it, but once you experience a smart home without congestion, you can’t go back.

    Wi-Fi Bands

    Tri-Band (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz + 5 GHz)

The Linksys EA8300 Max-Stream AC2200 is a tri-band Wi-Fi 5 router designed to deliver fast, stable wireless performance across multiple devices. Powered by a quad-core Qualcomm processor with 256 MB of RAM, it offers combined speeds of up to 2.2 Gbps across one 2.4 GHz and two 5 GHz bands. It features four external antennas with MU-MIMO and beamforming for efficient multi-device coverage, plus a USB 3.0 port for basic NAS functionality.

It doesn’t end at the bands. Don’t let the price fool you — this isn’t budget silicon. Under the hood is a Qualcomm processor. It can handle dozens of simultaneous connections without breaking a sweat. And with 256MB of RAM, it’s more than enough to run the software you want it to run. Wait, running software on your router?

The software is the real advantage

Yes. You can install OpenWRT on this bad boy.

I know I started strong, but I don’t want you to be convinced you need this router until you’ve read this section. The Linksys EA8300 is a great router as it is with its stock firmware, but it becomes a superpower when you flash OpenWRT on it. Stock software is usually the limiting factor when it comes to router performance. That Qualcomm processor is no good if there’s nothing to use it. And although the Linksys stock firmware was much better than what I’ve seen on D-Link and TP-Link routers, it’s just not comparable to OpenWRT.

OpenWRT is an open-source operating system that unlocks every hidden capability of the hardware. It gives you the latest security patches (even after the manufacturer stops supporting the device), surgical control over your signal strength, and access to professional-grade networking tools that usually cost a lot more. To take the point: OpenWRT is Linux. You’re installing Linux on your router. Can you imagine the possibilities? There’s so much you can do with OpenWRT on your router.

The biggest fear for a beginner is bricking the device during an OpenWRT flash. The EA8300 is, conversely, one of the safest routers to experiment with because it features a dual-partition layout. If you mess up a firmware flash on one partition, the other can rescue it. But, I mean, even if you did somehow manage to really brick it… it’s just $30.

Everyone has a use for this router

    Granted, with OpenWRT

Once you install OpenWRT on this router, it becomes a completely new machine. Suddenly, you can do things that you didn’t think would be possible without specialist hardware. You want to route data from one network, put a VPN on it, then route it back to your home? Easily achievable with OpenWRT. You want to run a lesser-known VPN protocol like VLESS on your router? You’re just one install away.

There are so many things you can do on a router with OpenWRT. If you don’t have any use for it at all, you could just host a website on it. And did I tell you that you can connect your phone through the router’s USB port and pump the hotspot connection to your entire home? Trust me when I say this: this router will pay dividends for anyone who ever checks their router’s admin panel. At the very least, you can install custom skins to make the panel look better than what the stock version did.

The retail name for the EA8300 is Linksys Max-Stream AC2200. Because many people are upgrading to Wi-Fi 6 or 7, these units are flooding the used market. You can find “open box” deals or used units that were only in service for a year or two. I got mine from an office that was moving to another location.

When buying used, make sure that the original power adapter (12V/2A) is included. The EA8300 is a robust router, but using a generic, underpowered brick can lead to instability. Once you have the unit, a quick reset and an OpenWRT flash will turn the $30 plastic box into a powerful tool in your tech arsenal. Think about it — you won’t regret it.

So… is it actually safe to use a TP-Link router today?

The leading router brand in the US is under attack.
